How do you respond when a patient becomes overwhelmed, anxious, tearful, angry or suddenly shuts down during a treatment? For many practitioners, these moments are part of working with patients, but knowing how to respond while maintaining clear professional boundaries can make an important difference in the treatment room. On Sunday, 1 November, Susan Liu will lead the one-day workshop “Emotional Regulation in the Treatment Room” in Leiden. Drawing on her background in both psychology and Chinese medicine, Susan will explore how emotional dysregulation can show itself through the body, breath, voice, posture, behaviour and communication. Through practical exercises, participants will learn grounding and breath techniques, somatic tools and communication strategies that can be incorporated into clinical practice. The workshop also addresses an essential question: where does your role as a practitioner end? Participants will explore boundaries, consent, red flags and when referral to a psychotherapist, GP or other mental-health professional is appropriate. Susan was also a speaker at this year’s A Midsummer TCM Journey, where she shared her perspective on the Shen across the lifespan. Dr. Poney Chiang is a leading expert in peripheral neuro-anatomy of acupoints and their associated neuro-modulation needle techniques. He has been invited to lecture at various international TCM and biomedical acupuncture symposiums and to conduct workshops in North/South America, Europe, and Australia. His current research interest involves an MRI-based study of the neuro-anatomy of acupoints on the scalp and their relationships to cortical functional regions. Dr. Chiang is the primary author revising Fundamentals of Chinese Acupuncture, (Ellis & Wiseman, Paradigm Publication) which is to feature original dissection and illustrations for more than 400 distinct acupoints. Dr. Chiang was appointed by the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioner & Acupuncturist of Ontario as a license examination writer, and as members of the Disciplinary and Complaint committees where he volunteers his service to protect the public and ensure high professional standards for the Chinese medicine profession. He is also called upon to serve as expert witness at professional hearings.
